Biographical Sketches of Clinton ResidentsJ. W. LEAKE, dealer in fresh and salt meats, Fifth avenue; is a native of Jefferson Co., N. Y.; born in 1833; lived there until 1850; removed to Rochester, and lived there until 1869, when he came to Iowa, and located in CIinton, and since then he has been engaged in business here. He was in the army, and served in the 1st Battalion, New York Sharp-Shooters; he was wounded three times. When he began life, he had nothing; he only had $3 when he left home in 1850, and walked thirty miles to Sackett's Harbor, and owes his success to his own efforts. He married Jennette Campbell, of New York, in 1854.
