We've just identified Andrew Sutherland Cooley Jr and his brother Thomas as '49ers (loosely - I think they arrived after the 1850 census). Although not fram McGregor at the time, probably Garnavillo, it is intriguing that groups of Clayton county Iowans left enmasse for the Calif goldfields. Do you have more information on this exodus? I live in California now and could possibly do some research on the gold rush if I had more information
