We have found our Carl Meier coming from Eldena, Mecklenburg Schwerin born there December 31, 1838. He had a brother Frederick who also came to Clayton County. He was born in 1835 in Eldena.

Our Carl Meier who is buried at the Clayton Center Cemetery in Lot 59 began life as Johan Carl Meyer. His brother kept his name of Johan Frederick Meyer and is also buried at the Clayton Center Cemetery in the old area North of the Church. Carl was on the Ship Vandalia which left Hamburg, Germany on May 4, 1872 for New York arriving on May 27, 1872.

The next time we find Carl is on the Illinois marriage list marrying Elisabeth Wille on September 28, 1872 by a Lutheran minister by the name of A. Wagner. We believe Elisabeth, age 20, and her family, Heinrich - father, age 50, Dora-mother, age 40, Fr- brother, age, 6 and Wilhe -brother, age 9 were on the same ship, the Vandalia, as Carl. The Wille's are listed as being from Hansen, Lüneburg, Germany which is about 50 miles Southwest of Eldena, Mecklenburg.
Some where around 1890 Carl's last name spelling changed from Meyer to Meier but brother Frederick kept the proper Meyer spelling. He was married to Anna.

They attended Zion Lutheran Church in Clayton Center.

On the 1880 census Carl Meier is listed as Chas. Meyer with Wife, Elisabeth and two daughters living in Read Township, Clayton Co, IA. By the time they left Clayton Center for Postville, IA they had had 9 children - two died at a young age. In Postville they had 2 additional children - a boy, Wilhelm born in 1892 and Elsa(Elsie) born in 1894.

In Postville, they attended the St. Paul Lutheran Church where most of the children were confirmed.

We are looking for any connections to these Meyer, Meier and Wille families in Clayton County, IA as we feel they came to an area where there was already family. Please contact me for further details.
