Steven,

I agree with the Eleanor aspect, and that she is George's mom. George was born in 1857 in Clayton County, but I cannot verify that off of any official documents, except for the Clayton County part. I am hoping to find a baptismal record for him in Guttenburg, or a Catholic Church in Clayton County. What do you think?

What I have also found is that in 1852, I find William as Kamphouse in Clayton county and that there are 3 of them. The census report has just the number in the family, which is three, but it did not call for names, outside of William or Wilhelm.
In addition I found a 1856 listing of a William or Wilhelm Kampur, which looks suspiciously close to William.
The next bonafide reading I have on him, is in 1870 in Winneshiek, with Sophia and George, but under the name of Kemphener (in ancestry) or as another last name in ( familysearch.org).

I have also found, that there was a Wilhelm Kamphans in the civil war registration, out of Ohio in 1863. It gives 1819 as his year of birth and his profession as "carpenter". I know that is little to go on, but his year of birth and his profession has always stayed constant on the census reports. So I believe he may have stayed in the US.
If a baptismal record for George could be located, should it not give George's mom and dad on it?
Do you have any information on a group called "The Western Settlement Society of Cincinnati"?
I think this group may have been the connection with William as far as Iowa and Ohio goes. Thinking out loud here.
Would you mind if we communicated through direct email?
Thanks
Tim
