The Clayton Co Journal, published in Guttenburg was started in the late 1850's.

Diana,
If there was a train wreck with casualties, it likely was covered by all Clayton co. papers and very likely the Dubuque papers. If it were me, I'd contact a librarian at the State Historical Society of Iowa library in Iowa City and ask if they have 'look up' services since you have a date. http://www.iowahistory.org/library/
They also loan reels of microfilmed newspapers via ILL, but you many not need to do that if they can do a simple lookup for you.
