Postville Review, Sat., 21 Sept. 1889.
Jas. Brooks, an old resident of Wagner township, 65 years of age, committed suicide by hanging, the body being found in his barn on Monday evening. There is no known cause for the deed only that he was tired of life, his children, as is often the case, not giving him the care and attention desired.

On Monday afternoon the body of James Brooks was discovered hanging in his barn, by his son, James A. Brooks.
Mr. Brooks was a widower and lived alone on his farm in Marion township, which was worked by a renter. Last Saturday evening was the last seen of him alive. On Sunday his non-appearance was noted by his renter and he notified the son, who resides at some little distance, and the latter came over and fed his father’s cattle, but saw nothing on the premises to excite any suspicion that all was not right. Monday he again went to feed the cattle, and found his father’s hat and coat in the barn, and a further search revealed the body hanging. Coroner Cain was notified and he summoned a jury composed of W.P. Eno, Charles Wedemeyer and H.W. Turner, who found a verdict of suicide.
Mr. Brooks was a native of Ireland, and was about 63 years of age. Of late he has been worrying some about some debts he owed, and it is thought he took his life during a fit of despondency.
