Pvt. Robert Dalen. Strawberry Point, Killed In Korea.

Special to the Gazette. Strawberry Point - Pvt. Robert Dalen, 21, twice wounded in action, has been reported killed in Korea.

According to word received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. LaVerne Dalen, he was killed in action Feb. 2.

Pvt. Dalen was inducted into the army on Jan. 28, 1952, and received his basic training at Camp Crowder, Mo. From there he went to Fort Bliss, Texas, and on July 6, 1952, left Camp Stoneman, Calif., for Monson, Korea, where he arrived July 21.

He was wounded Oct. 22 and hospitalized at Pusan. In December he was wounded and hospitalized again. On Jan 3 he returned to the front lines and in a letter his parents received several days ago he told them he was leaving "to go up Old Baldy".

Strawberry Point: Pvt. Robert LaVern Dalen, youngest son of LaVern and Genevieve Hall Dalen was born September 22, 1931, at Mederville. He attended high school at the Strawberry Point public school and grew to manhood in Strawberry Point, Iowa. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church.

On March 18, 1948, he enlisted in the Air Corps and received his honorable discharge on August 31, 1948, at McChord Air Corps Base, Tacoma, Washington

He was employed at Omaha, Nebraska, Waterloo, Iowa, and by M. J. Goodrich and John Sprang in Strawberry Point.

He was drafted into the army Jan. 28, 1952. He took his basic training at Fort Bliss, Texas, and after a short furlough at home in June, 1952, he went to Camp Stoneman, Calif., from which place he was shipped to Camp Drake, Japan. From there he went to Yong-Dog-Po, Korea, arriving there July 29, 1952. He was injured in October and again in December but was returned to the front on Jan. 3, 1953. He was killed in action on February 2, 1953, in the vicinity of Tokson-Ni, North Korea.

Survivors are: his parents, Mr. and Mrs. LaVern Dalen; three sisters, Mrs. Clay (Donna Mae) Brady, Greeley; Mrs. Darrell (Rita Maxine) Adams, Strawberry Point; and Mrs. Darrell (Mary Lou) Behning of Garber, Iowa; one brother, A/2c Vincent J. Dalen at Lowery Air Force Base, Denver, Colorado; one niece; three nephews; many aunts, uncles and cousins and a host of friends.

His body arrived Friday morning, April 3, funeral services were held from St. Mary's church, by the Rev. Father Robert Palen on Monday morning, April 6, at 10:00 a.m. Burial was in the Strawberry Point St. Mary's cemetery.
