WILLIAM ROBERTS
A prominent Clayton County pioneer passed peacefully away at his home June 30, 1908, of paralysis. The deceased was born in Daristown, Green County, Penn., Jan. 28, 1831, age 77 years, 5 months, and 2 days. He was born of Welch and Irish parents, David and Mary Roberts. In 1852 he was married to Elizabeth Herod. To them were born four children, one son and three daughters, Walter W., Mary M., Artelisa J. and Hanna Isabelle. He came to Iowa and settled on what is known now as the W. Warner farm, a little later the family home was established on what is known as the Buttolph place, where be lived for 22 years, on Feb. 21, 1881 the youngest daughter, Hanna Isabell and on Aug. 29th, of the same year, the oldest daughter, Mary M. Van Anchen passed away, since that time death has not invaded the family circle until the head of the family was taken on the early morning of June 30th, 1908. His sickness was protracted through about four years of more or less pain, and at times of intense suffering the iron constitution and tenacity to life inherited from his parents, sustained him when many another would have fallen, he bore it all with little complaint. He seemed to have a message which he carried in his heart through all the years and which he was unwilling should die within him, so about twenty four hours before he passed away he told his son W. M. Roberts that when he left his parents for Iowa, he promised them that he would meet them in Heaven and now he was ready to die, those nearest to him noted the change that came over him as he passed peacefully away. The body will rest in the Luana cemetery. Those who especially mourn in their bereavement are his wife, Elizabeth Roberts, one son, W. Roberts of Waterloo, Iowa, one daughter Artelisa J. Russell of Hardin, Iowa, one brother and one sister of Green county, Pa., three grandchildren, Will J. Roberts of Boise, Idaho, Mrs. May Vaughan of Hardin, Iowa, Elba J. Roberts, of Waterloo, Iowa; two great grandchildren, Iva and Jessie Vaughan of Hardin, Iowa. After a brief service in the home the funeral was conducted in the Hardin M.E. Church by the Pastor, Geo. B. Crinklaw. The choir led by Coral Pearson, rendered appropriate hymns, and beautiful floral decorations were provided, all of which helped to comfort those who mourn their loss.
