JOHN MARTINS 1863-1951

Rites Held For John Martins

John Martins, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Martins, was born April 7, 1863 in Garnavillo. October 16, 1863 he was baptized in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Garnavillo and on April 14, 1878, in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Garnavillo, he was confirmed. The deceased spent the days and years of his youth in and around Garnavillo working as a hired hand. He also worked for a few years in western Iowa.

On October 30, 1891, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Klinkenberg, to which union seven children were born. The wedding was performed in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Garnavillo. Shortly after marriaage, in the spring of 1892, he moved on the present Gerwin Martins farm, five miles southwest of Luana. In the spring of 1929, he moved to Luana. Here he stayed until ill health overtook him. From then on, for a period of three months at a time, he spent in the homes of his daughters.

For the past nine years the deceased was an invalid and was always bedfast. Sunday morning, December 7, at 5:00 o'clock he passed away in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Walter Tietz near Decorah, having attained the age of 95 years and eight months.

His wife preceded him in death in 1941. He is survived by three sons: Leska Martins of Luana, John Martins of Postville, and Gerwin Martins of Postville; four daughters, Mrs. Gus Lenth of Farmersburg, Mrs. William Radloff of Luana, Mrs. Walter Tietz of Decorah, and Mrs. Roy Saacke of Farmersburg; 30 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren.
