Corn Picking Accidents Kill One, Injure One

Two corn picking accidents within three days brought death to one and serious injury to another. Both accidents involved the power take-off machinery on the tractor.

Carlton Martins, 33, Luana was killed instantly Tuesday morning, November 16, when he was caught in the power take-off of a tractor from which he was unloading corn. He had apparently crawled under the wagon to make some adjustment when the hood of his sweat shirt caught on the turning shaft. He was choked to death instantly.

The accident took place between 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. Dr. Kiesau was called and the Postville Fire Department rescue unit was called but there was no help for the victim.

Carlton Martins, 33, was married and the father of four children. He was a dairy-hog farmer operating a 240 acre farm near Luana. he was one of six candidates last January for the Outstanding Young Farmer award.

Oscar Russett of Postville suffered serious injuries in a power take-off Sunday evening at his farm. His clothes ripped free from him when they became entangled in the power shaft but he was bruised and cut. He was brought to Community Memorial Hospital where he was treated for bruises and a fractured shoulder. X-rays are continuing to see if further damage was done.
