Gerwin August William Martins

Gerwin August William Martins, 84, son of John and Mary (Klinkenberg) Martins was born Dec. 28, 1907, in Grand Meadow Township, Clayton County, near Luana, IA. He died Saturday, Jan. 11, 1992, in University Hospitals and Clinics at Iowa City.

He was baptized and confirmed in St John Lutheran Church at Luana. He attended the Pixler School in Grand Meadow Township. On Oct. 7, 1931, he was married to Mabel Elizabeth Schlitter at the home of her parents. The couple farmed on his father's farm near Luana until 1954 when they moved to Postville and built their present home. While living in town, Gerwin was employed as a truck driver as well as driving the school bus and later at Iowa Turkey Products.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville since 1971. He had been a member of the Brotherhood at St. John Lutheran Church at Luana and of the Brotherly Love Lodge No. 204 in Postville as well as the Cedar Rapids Consistory and a 32nd Degree Mason.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Mabel, who died Jan 14, 1981, a son Carlton, two brothers, Leska and John, three sisters, Mrs. Gus (Anna) Lenth, Mrs. Bill (Mary) Radloff and Mrs. Walter (Elsie) Tietz.

Surviving are four daughters, Mary and husband, Roger Russett, Postville, Lucille Martins, West Des Moines, Norma and husband, Daryl Sander, Postville, Anna and husband, Darold Lamphier, Cedar Rapids; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Roy (Effie) Saacke, Farmersburg, and four sisters-in-law, Mrs. John (Hilda) Martins, Postville, Mrs. Carlton (Mardella) Schlitter, Monona, Mrs. Willis (Hazel) Schlitter, Waukon, and Mrs. Milton (Evelyn) Schlitter of Sumner.

Funeral services for Gerwin Martins were held Wednesday, Jan. 15, 1992, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. The Rev. Charles W. Miller officiated. Joann Martins was the organist for the service. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in St. John Lutheran Cemetery at Luana.

Casket bearers were Leonard Tietz, Robert Saacke, Delos Martins, Harold Lenth, Jerald Martins and Don Martins. Honorary casket bearers were Delbert Martins, Melvin Radloff and Elmer Radloff.
