Hattie Isilida Springer, daughter of Lafayette and Mary Springer, was born in Galena, Ill, March 12, 1871. She was the daughter of a Civil War veteran who served 3 years and a descendant of the Springer who was famous in the Revolutionary War and could trace lineage back to Alfred the Great. She was married to J.[ames] F. McMonigal in Glen Haven, Wisconsin, August 23, 1892. To them were born Mrs. Lettie C. Kouba, Cedar Rapids, Ernest McMonigal, Denver, Irving McMonigal, Dundee, Mrs. Hazel Wright, Cedar Rapids, Merle McMonigal, Cedar Rapids, and Opal and Beulah, at home.

Mrs. McMonigal was a faithful wife and mother and was the first death in this circle. She leaves also a brother, Albert Springer, Greeley, two sisters, Mrs. William Cree, Amery, Wisconsin, and Mrs. Calvin M. Cree, Croscu, Montana. A maternal aunt, Mrs. Charles Reed, Sumner; an uncle, Lucian Sanford, Strocl, South Dakota; Mrs. Isilda Smith, Holton, Kansas. Also the two grand children, Ruth Eileen and Dean Jr., children of Irving McMonigal.

Mr. and Mrs. McMonigal began housekeeping at Colesburg later moving to Greeley where they remained for 9 years. They have lived in their pleasant home southwest of Edgewood for the past number of years rearing their loved ones and have been prospered enjoying the acquaintances and respect of hosts of friends.

Mrs. McMonigal’s sickness dates back over 4 years, and there seemed to be recovery but an insidious malady still remained and death ensued as result of uremic poisoning and pneumonia and the home circle and our whole community were saddened when her demise came Wednesday evening, March 25 at the age of 54 years, 12 days.

In earlier years they were attendants and constituents of Methodist Church.

In the words of Longfellow,
"There is no flock, however watched and tended,
But one dead lamb is there
There is no fireside, however defended
But hath the vacant chair!"

We commend these [words unreadable on microfilm], with all who mourn, to the God of all comfort.

From the poem "Resignation."
