MRS. MARY THYNE CALLED TO HER REWARD

On Monday, December 29th, 1924, at the hour of 9:30 p. m. the beats of a heart which had sent forth love and devotion for so many, her God, her family and friends, were stilled forever and that spirit, so gentle, so kind and self-sacrificing seemed wafted away to a place of eternal rest beyond.

That solemn moment marked the death of Mrs. Mary Thyne at her home, two and one-half miles south-east of Volga, at the age of 67 years, 2 months and 2 days.

Mrs. Thyne was known in youth as Mary Catherine Henry, eldest daughter of Alex and Anna Henry and was born near Franklinville, Cattarangus County, New York, on October 27, 1857. On January 6, 1866, when 9 years old, she, with her parents moved from the East to the community of Cox Creek, where she grew to womanhood and which place has since been her home.

She had been ailing a few weeks and in October suffered a severe stroke of paralysis from which she never recovered. She was cared for by her children in the many weeks of her illness but never at any time were they encouraged that she might regain her health. Her life was one of those lives which seemed lived for others and was one of constant toil and sacrifice. She was ever ready to extend a helping hand to anyone in need or undertake a responsibility to further some good, for in so doing she found joy in life and hoped to earn a more meritorious reward in death. In no way could you measure adequately the affection and sacrifice expended upon her family. So many of her years were devoted to the care of the sick and other inmates of her household. She was quiet and unassuming and in this lay her strength.

Her life work must have been accomplished since God in his infinite wisdom called her to give an account of her stewardship.

On January 22, 1877, Mary Catherine Henry was united in marriage to Austin Thyne and this union was blessed with a family of thirteen: children. Mrs. Jennie Behrens, Mrs. Anna Mullen, Mrs. Florence Courtnage, Austin William, Robert Hubert, Eileen and Josephine Thyne, Strawberry Point, Iowa; Mrs. Isabelle Jacobia, Postville, Iowa; Emmet Thyne, Volga, Iowa; Mrs. Grace Wiley and Walter Thyne, Edgewood, Iowa.

Mrs. Thyne was one of a family of thirteen children, namely: M. W. Henry, R. P. Henry, J. M. Henry, Mrs. Kate O'Brien and Mrs Rose O'Brien, Strawberry Point, Iowa; W. A. Henry, Elkader, Iowa; Alex Henry, Mission Hill, South Dakota; M.C. Henry, Verndale, Minnesota; Mrs. Grace Malone, Wadena, Minnesota; P. A. Henry, Alma, Michigan and Mrs. Margaret Dinan, Littleport, Iowa. A sister Anna died at the age of 2 years. She also leaves thirteen grandchildren, an aunt, Mrs. Ellen McTaggart and anumber of nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral was held Friday morning, January 2, 1925 at 10:30 o'clock from the Sacred Heart Parish, Cox Creek, where Requiem High Mass was celebrated by Father Casey and interment took place in the nearby cemetery by the side of her husband, who departed this life January 13, 1914. Her casket bearers were her six sons. She is at rest and let us hope she will win the crown of glory promised to those who keep God's Commandments.

Weep not that her toils are over, Weep not that her race is won; God grant we may rest as calmly, When our work, like hers, is done.

Leaves have their time to fall, And flowers to wither, at the north wind's breath;

And stars to set but all, Thou hast all reasons for thine own, O Death!

Relatives from away who attended the funeral were: E. M. Carr, Manchester, Iowa; John and James Carr, Dan Kenna and Calista Merkle, Lamont, Iowa; Thos. Cormack, Farmersburg, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Pat Cassiday, Elkport, Iowa; Mrs. Anna Reimer, Littleport, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. ??? (obituary cut off).
