Charles Schmidt Funeral Services

Funeral services for Charles Fred Schmidt, 78, of Farmersburg were held Friday morning, Sept. 24, at 10:30 o'clock at St. John Lutheran church in Farmersburg with Rev. Fred F. Darnauer of Monona officiating.

The body lay in state at the church from 9:30 o'clock in the morning until the time of the services. Burial was in the Farmersburg and Wagner cemetery.

Mr. Schmidt was taken sick last March and has been in declining health since that time. He died Tuesday morning, Sept. 21, at the Guttenberg hospital.

He was born Nov. 14, 1892, in Boardman township, Clayton county, a son of William and Minnie Schmidt. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran church at Clayton Center by Rev. F. W. Seifert. He received the grade school education of his day.

He was engaged in farming in the Farmersburg community from 1914 to 1949 and hauled cream for the St. Olaf creamery for 36 years. For a number of years he served as caretaker of his church. He took great pride and interest in the Farmersburg and Wagner cemetery and in maintaining its premises.

He was married to Anna Huckstadt, Feb. 17, 1914. Four children were born to this union. Two sons, William of La Crosse, Wis., and Carl of Farmersburg survive. A son and a daughter preceded him in death as did his wife, Anna in 1941.

He was married Oct. 9, 1947, to Alma Walter, who survives. He is also survived by a stepson, Alvin Walter of Arvada, Colo.; seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Earl (Emma) Schubert of Forest Park, Ill., Mrs. Earl (Mabel) Schuler and Mrs. Lester (Lenora) Karsner of Long Beach, Calif., and Mrs. Lucy Nelson of Guttenberg; two brothers, Ben of Guttenberg and Lawrence of Elkader.

Preceding him also in death were a brother, Arno, and a sister, Leona.

Music at the services was provided by the Senior choir. Mrs. James Walter was the organist.

Honorary pallbearers were: Ed Busch, Kenneth Behrend, Elmer Muller, and Alto Fehlhafer.
