Alma Dorothy Schmidt

Alma Dorothy Schmidt (Kurth) daughter of Fred Kurth and his wife Louise nee Blum was born October 10, 1891 in Wagner Township, Clayton County, Iowa. She was baptized November 27, 1891 by Pastor F. W. Seifert of Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Center, and was confirmed by Pastor F. G. Braun April 8, 1906 at St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg. She attended school at the Wagner Central School. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Farmersburg and a member of the Ladies Aid there. She attended church and Aid whenever her health permitted.

On October 9, 1947 she was united in marriage to Charles Schmidt. They lived in Farmersburg until her husband's death. She entered the Riverview Care Center in Guttenberg on November 3, 1971. She was in good health there until December 18, 1972 when she was taken by ambulance to the Guttenberg hospital. Alma Schmidt died at 10:20 p.m. on January 25, 1973.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a son Eldo; two daughters, Viola and Elma; three sisters, Mrs. Hulda (George) Suddendorf, Mrs. Wm. (Ella) Engelhardt, Cresco, Mrs. Lewis (Hedwig) Fuelling, Farmersburg; five brothers, Edwin, Harvey, Fred, Lester and an infant brother, all of Farmersburg.

Alma Schmidt is survived by her son Alvin Walter, Arvada, Colo.; two step sons, William Schmidt, LaCrosse, Wis.; and Carl Schmidt, Farmersburg; 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, one brother Elmer Kurth, Monona.

Her funeral was in St. John Lutheran Church on January 29. Pastor David M. Heck officiated and Mrs. Judy Walter was the organist. The St. John Lutheran Church choir sang two of her favorite hymns. She was buried in the Farmersburg-Wagner cemetery.

The pallbearers were Norman Sedlmayr, Ed Bush, Louis Seitz, Lewis Breitsprecher, Clarence Engelhardt and Oscar Torkelson.
