Duane Merle Cowell

Duane Merle Cowell, son of Dave and Wilma Melcher Cowell, was born June 8, 1926 in Linton Township, Allamakee County. He was baptized Sept. 11, 1927 at the Methodist Church in Volney, and confirmed Sept. 13, 1936, also at the Methodist Church in Volney. He attended Litton #2 School and graduated from Waterville High School in 1944.

Duane entered the U.S. Army on Oct. 4, 1950, and was discharged Sept. 29, 1952. He worked as a trucker in Billings, Mont. The last nine years he resided in Postville, Iowa. He was the manager of the Town & Country Trailer Court for eight years. He was a member of the Brotherly Love Lodge / #204, Postville.

Duane died May 29, 1993 at Boone Hospital in Columbia, Mo. He was 66.

Preceding him in death were a son, Dwight, who died July 30, 1966, and three sisters in infancy.

Survivors include a daughter, Diane Kurlo of Carpentersville, Ill.; a son, Dave Cowell of Postville; his parents, Dave and Wilma Cowell of Monona, Iowa; two brothers, George of Storm Lake, Iowa and Bruce of LaCrescent, Minn.; a sister, Marcella Wendel of Postville; a granddaughter, Jennifer Cowell; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 2, 1993 at the Garden City United Methodist Church, Monona. Rev. Gary Dobbins officiated. Organist was Mrs. William Miene, Jr.

Pallbearers were George Cowell, Kenneth Wendel, Bruce Cowell, Bruce Snively, Dennis Bahls and Russell White. Burial was in the Smithfield Cemetery, rural Monona. Schultz's Funeral home of Monona was in charge of services.
