Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Geneva Leona (Erickson) Frye, age 90, of Phoenix, Arizona, formerly of Clayton, Iowa died following a brief illness June 28, 1999 at Hospice of Peoria, Arizona. Memorial services will be August 18 at the Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo, Iowa at 1:00 p.m. with burial in the Clayton Cemetery following the services.
Geneva Leona was born on September 12, 1908 at Mount Vernon, Wisconsin, daughter of Edward and Mattie (Sponem) Erickson. She lived her childhood years in Mount Horeb, Wisconsin. She married Arthur Edwin Frye on April 17, 1927. They met while being employed at the Mt. Horeb Theatre as background musicians for silent movies and then traveled several years with the Cairns Brothers Vaudeville Troupe before settling in Clayton, Iowa. The formed their own orchestras, Mississippi Nite Hawks and later the Rhythm Rascals, which disbanded following the death of Mr. Frye, December 24, 1944. She was well-known in the Clayton area as a musician, seamstress, and for her flower gardening. She played with several local bands, along with her son, Robert Frye. Mrs. Frye began working at Mercy Health Center, Dubuque, Iowa in 1947 as assistant kitchen supervisor. She moved to Phoenix in 1962 where she worked as senior housekeeper at the Ramada Inn, until retiring in 1981.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters, Viola Erickson and Lorraine Knudson and two brothers, Earl Erickson and Irving Erickson.
Surviving are two sons, Robert (Marlys) Frye of Poway, California and Rolf (Gloria) Dickson of Fall Creek, Wisconsin * There is no indication that Geneva was married to a Dickson but that is the name that is listed in the obituary* 2 daughters, Doris Tigges of Dubuque, Iowa and Shirley Sutherland of Phoenix, Arizona; 8 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Erickson of Beloit, Wisconsin and nieces and nephews.
