Mrs. George (Elizabeth Taake) Wolf

Elizabeth Taake was born in Leede, Westphalia, Germany, on December 2nd, 1849, and passed away at her home in Elkader on May 17, 1928, having reached the age of 78 years, seven months, and 15 days.

She came to this country with her parents when fourteen years of age, the family locating at Clayton Center in this country. She was married on September 17, 1868 to George Wolf, a veteran of the Civil War. They began married life in Elkader in the home she occupied until her death.

To this union there were born six sons and one daughter. Two sons, Daniel and Louis, and the daughter, Hattie, died while young. The surviving sons are George C., of Madison, Wis.; Fred L. of Newport, Wash.; Henry M., of Elkader, and Oscar F., of Eureka, Montana. Three sisters are living, Mrs. Lisetta Bosch, of Merrill, Wis.; Mrs. Minnie Engelhardt, of St. Olaf, and Mrs. Louis Leibrock, of Elkader. Nine grandchildren will carry a precious memory of her through their lives.

Her husband preceded her in death Nov. 5, 1904. Since then her son Henry and family have lived with her and provided loving care for her declining years.

Mrs. Wolf was a faithful member of the Evangelical church of the Frauen-Verein and of Charity Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Mrs. Wolf’s life was centered in her home and family, her church, her neighbors and friends. She had her share of difficulties and sorrows but carried through them with a faith and cheerfulness that brightened all who came in contact with her. Her later years of life were enriched by the love of her sons and their families and pride in the knowledge that they were worthy. A large circle of friends and neighbors also brought pleasure to her, and they in turn will miss her.

Her life was rich, not in the terms of material wealth, but in spiritual riches; in proud motherhood of worthy sons, in faith and love and friendships.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Evangelical church and were largely attended. Rev. Franke officiated. Burial was beside her husband and children in the East Side cemetery, the services of the Order of the Eastern Star were given at the grave.
