Wesley Monserud

Wesley Monserud was born July 19, 1921 at home in Allamakee County to William and Mabel Monserud. He attended rural school in Taylor Township and Waterville High School.

Wes married Jean Schmidt on April 2, 1945 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Garnavillo, Iowa.

A lifelong farmer, Wes was also very active in the community. He served on the St. Paul's Lutheran Church council, sold Archer Oil, was a Linton township trustee and a member of the Linton Township Rural Fire Board. He was also a member of many county agricultural committees and served as a board member of the Scandanavian Mutual Insurance Company.

Wes farmed seven miles northeast of Monona for over 50 years. After retirement, he spent the past few years living in Apache Junction, Arizona during the winter and on the farm in the summer with his wife Jean. They would have celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on April 2 this year.

Wes loved people and was known for his sense of humor. He enjoyed photography, traveling, bowling and golfing.

Wes died Friday, February 11, 2000 at 2:20 a.m. at Valley Lutheran Hospital in Mesa, AZ following a sudden illness. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Wes is survived by his wife Jean; four sons, Gary (Ann) of Concord, Mass.; Bruce of Gainesville, Florida; Clay (Adele) of Iowa City; Scott of Grapevine, Texas; two daughters, Vicki (Curt) Welch of McGregor, IA, and Patti (Terry) Jackson of Harbor Springs, Michigan; 14 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren; and four sisters, Grace Sersland of Decorah, Edna Bosier of Cedar Rapids, Nora Burgess of Marion, and Edith (Clayton) Schnoebelen of Cedar Rapids.

Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 14, 2000 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Monona with the Rev. Gene Kramer officiating. Organist was Judy Walter. Pallbearers were David Bosier, Jeffrey Martin, Steven Schmidt, Dennis Burgess, Kevin Schmidt, Michael Sersland. Burial was in Monona City Cemetery.
