Loftsgard, Sophia G. 1901-1995

Sophia Geneva Loftsgard, daughter of Nels and Anna (Jellum) Loftsgard, was born January 10, 1901 on a farm west of Gunder near Elgin, Iowa. She died Monday, December 25, 1995 at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville. She was 94 years old.

She was baptized March 31, 1901 and confirmed May 21, 1916, both at the Marion Lutheran Church. Sophia attended the rural school near her home. From 1949 until 1970 she farmed with her brother-in-law, Roy Johanningmeier, and later with her nephew, Carlyn.

From 1970 to 1975 she was employed at Iowa Turkey Products. Even into the mid-1980's, Sophia loved to help her nephew, Carlyn, with the spring farm work. Sophia was a member of the Marion Lutheran Church in Gunder and the WELCA. She was always ready to help any relative who needed her. In her younger years, she quilted and crocheted until her eyesight failed.

She is preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Louie Loftsgard, Ole Loftsgard and Ted Loftsgard; five sisters, Mary Olson, Tilda Amundson, Nina Amundson, Helgina Nelson and Viola Johanningmeier.

Surviving is a brother, Nelvin (Bessie) Loftsgard of West Union, Iowa, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Thursday, December 28, 1995 at the Marion Lutheran Church at Gunder, Iowa. Rev. Marshall Hahn officiated. Casket bearers were Justin Baker, Kenneth Staff, Carlyn Johanningmeier, Virgil Johanningmeier, Ray Richard and Brad Richard. The Schutte Funeral Service of Clermont was in charge of arrangements. Interment was in the church cemetery.
