George Kelpien 1882-1961

Funeral services were held for George Kelpien Sunday, October 1961, at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Clayton Center, with the Rev. J. H. Zerhusen officiating and burial was in the Clayton Center cemetery.

Pallbearers were Carlys Best, Maurice Whitman, Erwin Taake, Freddie Lahrs, Fred Stendel, and Floyd Schroeder.

George William John Kelpien, son of Charles and Lisette Taake Kelpien, was born August 7, 1882, Read Township, Clayton County, near Clayton Center, and died at his home in Elkader Thursday October 12. He had been in failing health for the past three years.

Mr. Kelpien was baptized December 8, 1882, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Center and was confirmed there April 11, 1897, by the Rev. F. W. Seifert.

He attended the rural school and choose farming as his vocation.

Mr. Kelpien was married December 13, 1905 to Linda Louise Vogt at the home of her parents near Clayton Center. They farmed in Read Township, Clayton County, until 1937, when they retired and moved to Elkader.

He had been the president of the Hanover school and a member of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Clayton Center.

Mr. and Mrs. Kelpien celebrated their golden wedding anniversary December 13, 1955.

He was preceded in death by his father, 1945, his mother in 1956, and his wife September 18, 1958, two sisters and one brother who died in infancy and early childhood.

Mr. Kelpien is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Arno (Mabel) Heuer, and one granddaughter, Marlene Heuer, Garnavillo; two sisters, Mrs. Emil (Hattie) Best and Ella Kelpien, Elkader; two brothers, Carl and Elmer, Elkader; also one uncle August Taake, Dubuque.
