Funeral services for Adele Elizabeth Berns Nieland were held Monday, Sept. 19, 11 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Monona. Father John Moran officiated. Burial was in St. Patrick's Catholic cemetery. Schultz's Funeral Home, Monona was in charge of services.

She was born March 30, 1927 in Garnavillo, Iowa to parents Arthur and Evelyn Zapf Berns. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Garnavillo. She received her education in St. Joseph Catholic school and Garnavillo High School graduating in 1946.

June 26, 1951 Adele married Elmer Edward Nieland at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Garnavillo. The couple had 7 children. They lived in Dubuque and Osterdock before moving to their farm in Giard Township, Clayton County, Iowa where they lived for 32 years.

Adele died Thursday, Sept. 15, 1988 at Prairie Memorial Hospital, Prairie du Chien, WI, following a long illness.

Preceding her in death was her father, Arthur Berns.

Surviving is her husband, Elmer; 4 sons, Dennis, Tama, Donald and Dean, Monona and David, Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri; 3 daughters, Teresa Graham, Minneapolis, MN, Mary Jane Drahn, Farmersburg and Kimberly Nieland, Monona; 5 grandchildren; her mother, Evelyn Zapf Lynch, Garnavillo and 3 brothers, Robert Berns, Jerald Berns and Joe Hildebrand, all of Garnavillo.

Pallbearers: Joe Johanningmeier, Gene Baade, Rick Hass, Alan Leas, Mike Bentien and Elmer Wagner.

Honorary pallbearers: Harland Hass, David Bartz, Lee Allen Johanningmeier, Jim McNally, Irvin Horns, Milton Nelson.
