DEATH TAKES ED SCHEFFERT

1870-1959
(Monona Leader, June 1959)

Funeral services for Edward H. Scheffert, 88, were held last Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church with Rev. E. Wayne Hilmer officiating. The body lay in state at the church from 12:30 to 2 o'clock. Burial was in the City cemetery.

Mr. Scheffert died Thursday morning, June 11, at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Elgie Ferguson, after being ill for more than four years. He was confined to his bed during that time as a result of a stroke.

He was born Dec. 3, 1870*, near Garnavillo. He was educated in the rural schools of Clayton County and lived in this county all of his life. He was married to Matilda Abel, Oct. 17 1890, the couple going to live on a farm near Garnavillo. From there they moved to a farm in Wagner township. They later purchased the farm 1 mile east of Luana, which is now operated by Ronald Gunderson. Mr. and Mrs. Scheffert moved from the farm to Luana in 1925. They lived there for a year, when Mrs. Scheffert died. Mr. Scheffert then moved to Monona, living here for the last 33 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and three sons, Alvin, Elmer, and Orlando. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Elgie (Viola) Ferguson and Mrs. John (Angeline) Goltz, both of Monona; one son, Vern of Portland; 10 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

Music at the services was provided by Mrs. Ben Frese Jr. Mrs Ivon J. Schultz was the organist. Pallbearers were: John Reidel, George Wiethorn, Walter Duwe, Ed Haag, Leslie D. Seeland, Karl Erb, Emil Aulerich, and Emil Neverman.
