Albert Topel Funeral Held

Funeral services for Albert August Topel, 70, were held Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 31, at 1:30 o'clock at Pilgrim Evangelical United Brethren church with Rev. Clifton W. Ellerbeck officiating.

The body lay in state at the church from 12:30 o'clock until the time of services. Burial was in the Monona City cemetery.

Mr. Topel died suddenly of a cerebral hemorrhage in his home early Monday morning Jan. 29.

He was born a son of Charles and Matilda, nee Schlitter, Topel, Sept. 26, 1891, at Sixteen in Allamakee county. He was baptized Feb. 18, 1892, by Rev. John C. Hoffman. He was educated in the rural school at Sixteen, where he spent the early years of his life. As a young man he worked for various farmers in the area.

He was married to Ruby Peters, Sept. 23, 1947, in the parsonage of Pilgrim Evangelical United Brethren church by Rev. A. W. Ebert. During December of that year they purchased and moved onto the farm east of Monona, where they have lived since.

Mr. Topel was regular in attendance at the Evangelical United Brethren church, first at Watson and later in Monona. He was faithful in reading the Bible. Among his pastimes he liked to tell stories of his early life and especially enjoyed being with his stepchildren and their families.

Preceding him in death were his parents and three brothers, Charles, Herman, and Clarence.

In addition to his widow, he is survived by one sister, Mrs. Joe (Minnie) Klima; three brothers, Theodore of Waukon and Elmer and George of Monona; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Harlan (Delores) Hass and Mrs. Milton (Gloria) Klima; two stepsons, Robert Peters of Dubuque and William Peters of Prairie du Chien; and seven step-grandchildren.

Music at the services was provided by a quartet composed of Mr. and Mrs. John Wachter, Miss Leila Ann Debes, and David Schlitter. Miss Marjorie Schlitter was the organist.

Pallbearers were: Alfred Fett, and Donald, David, Gaylord, Fred, Carlton, Eldred, and Herbert Schlitter.

Among those from a distance attending the funeral services were: Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Levenhagen and family of Effingham, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Milton Schlitter of Waterloo; Mr. and Mrs. Dale Schmidt and Mrs. Homer Dickenson of Beaver Dam, Wis.; Theodore Topel, Mrs. Herman Topel and Robert, Mr. and Mrs. Grover Timmerman, Mrs. Darlene Kuehn, Mr. and Mrs. Willis Schlitter, and William Ferguson of Waukon; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schlitter of Luana; Mr. and Mrs. Gervin Martins of Postville; and Lawrence Moses of Prairie du Chien.
