Eugene P. Meis

COLESBURG, Iowa -- Eugene P. "Gene" Meis, 68, of 106 Parkview Court, Colesburg, and formerly of Dyersville, died on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque, of complications following surgery.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, New Vienna, with the Rev. John O'Connor officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Reiff Funeral Home, Dyersville, where the wake service will be held at 4 p.m., and the Knights of Columbus will say the rosary at 7 p.m.

He was born March 17, 1939, in Dubuque, son of Florian and Vita Mary (Kalb) Meis. He graduated from the former Xavier High School, Dyersville. On Sept. 6, 1969, he married Mary Kay Kubesheski at Nativity Catholic Church, Dubuque.

He owned and operated Gene's Agri Supply in Colesburg.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served from 1958 to 1962. He was a member of St. Patrick's Parish in Colesburg, the Dyersville Knights of Columbus Council No. 1734, and the 4th Degree Dubourg Assembly No. 1573.

Gene enjoyed family life, especially activities with his granddaughters and bridge with the family. He actively contributed to his community and parish.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Kay Meis, of Colesburg; a son Robert Eugene (Lisa) Meis, of Cedar Rapids; two grandchildren, Melissa and Madison Meis; five siblings, Mary A. Peiffer, of Cascade, Rose L. Fischer, of Manchester, the Rev. James A. Meis (retired), of St. Louis, Mo., Vincent F. Meis, of Dubuque, and Margaret V. Meis of Independence, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John J. Meis; and four brothers-in-law, John and Robert Kubesheski, Robert Peiffer and Sylvester Fischer.
