Death Claims 89 year old former cigar maker here as Alfred Meyer passes.
Almost the end of an era occurred with the death in Luana Monday of Alfred Meyer, who for many years, with his brother, operated a small cigar factory in Guttenberg. For many years until about ten years ago, the Meyer Brothers turned out the well-known Judge Hale cigar and other brands.
Eighty-nine years of age, Mr. Meyer had been in poor health for some time and recently had made his home with Anton Wille in Luana, though he was a familiar figure on the streets of Guttenberg for a number of years after he closed the cigar factory.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday morning from the Steger funeral home to St. Mary's church where Rev. Louis Grunewald was in charge.
Burial was in Mt. Olivet cemetary with the following as pallbearers: Leo Wille, Joseph Wille, Ed. V. Huene, P.J. Meier, Leo Nigg and Joseph Wach.
Mr. Meyer was born in Guttenberg January 11, 1865, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Meyer. He never married.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Clara Schute of Guttenberg, while he was preceded in death by two brothers, Adolph and George, and one sister, Mrs. Mira Heitman.
