DIED - James Woodward of Farmersburg, in this county, died on Monday, July 27th, aged 75. An old resident, an upright citizen, and an esteemed friend of ours.

Will not some one send us a brief biography of the deceased?

Obituary
We are indebted to Rev. Wm Conn of the M.E. Church for the following excellently written notice of our [illegible] James Woodward, of Farmersburg, township, Clayton county, Iowa. The communication came to hand in due time for last week's issue, but it was mislaid. We regret its non-appearance before, but it is too late now to do more than confess errors and publish.

Eds. TIMES - Gentlemen - in compliance with your request I send you the following brief obituary:

James Woodward of Farmersburg, died July 27th, 1868, in his 77th year, and was buried on Tuesday the 29th. Although the season was harvest and a pressing time for labor, the large attendance at his funeral gave evidence of the great respect community cherished for him.

The deceased was born in Vermont, April 25th, 1792, and was married November 25th, 1825, in North Hero, same State, and resided there till the spring of 1846 when he removed to Clinton county, N.Y.; from thence he came to Farmersburg, Iowa, in the spring of 1848 with his family of three sons and three daughters.

He purchased the land upon which the village of National now stands when there was little but open prairie to be seen.

During the entire of his married life no death has occurred in the family; take a term of 43 years and this fact is a very unusual occurrence.

Father Woodward was among the earliest settlers of Clayton county, a man of more than ordinary mental power, of unimpeachable character, of unflinching fidelity to his convictions of duty and universally beloved by all who knew him.

He was once elected Justice of the Peace but he always succeeded in reconciling the parties without legal proceedings.

All honor to the memory of the deceased!

He was a true Christian; in his death the Church has lost one of its brightest lights. His life was pure and death peaceful; he now rests from his labor awaiting the resurrection of the Just.
