Elkader Register, 08 July 1881.
Mr. Tobias Kelliher, an old resident of this county, died suddenly at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. P. Hyde, in Boardman township on Wednesday. He was sitting in a chair, apparently in his usual good health, and died without a struggle.
Deceased was born in county Waterford, Ireland, 1792, being at the time of his death 89 years of age. He came to the United States in 1848 and first settled in the state of New York. In 1855 he came to Clayton county, and has always lived here until his death.
He was the father of eight children, six of whom are now living, four sons and 2 daughters. Of the sons, Thomas and Jeremiah, are well known in Elkader.
Mr. Kelliher was a farmer, and had amassed considerable property by hard work. He was strictly honest and was never known to wrong a man out of a cent. He led a good christian life and was respected and honored by all who knew him.
His remains were laid away to rest until the final resurection, in the Catholic cemetery at Elkader, this morning, at 9 o'clock, and they were followed to the grave by large numbers of mourning friends and relatives.
