Elkader Register. 22 Apr. 1884.
GARNAVILLO.
On Wednesday morning of last week, a horrible accident occurred at the home of August Engwerson, of this township. Mrs. E., was preparing to scrub the floor, and taking a pail of hot water from the stove sat it on the floor. Several children were playing in the room, among them Mrs. E's., three year old daughter, who in trying to walk backwards, came in contact with the bucket of boiling hot water and fell into it, scalding her in a frightful manner, and she having on woolen undergarments made the burn more severe. Drs. Boals & Sharp were immediately summoned, but the child was beyond hopes of recovery but lingered in great agony until Thursday morning, when she was released by death. The funeral took place on Saturday at one o'clock, from the German Lutheran church. The family have the sympathy of the whole community in their affliction.
