Funeral services for Charles English, 67, were held Friday morning, April 20, at 9:30 in St. Patrick's church at Monona. The Rev. Wilfred Schmidt sang the requiem mass. Mr. English died suddenly at his home in Santa Monica, Calif., Friday, April 13.
He was born near McGregor March 10, 1889, a son of Thomas and Mary (Grady) English. His early life was spent on the farm with his parents and eight brothers. He attended the Highland Park School of Pharmacy in Des Moines. After graduation he entered the armed forces during World War I. Later he and his brother, Pat, operated the English Brothers drug store for many years. About two years ago he moved to California, after being in the drug store for 35 years.
On Jan. 02, 1923, he was married to Anna Rubie of Decorah. Mr. English was a charter member of the Leslie H. Smith Post No. 519 of the American Legion of Monona and of the Monona Kiwanis club.
He was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers. Survivors are his wife and two brothers, Edward and Ben.
Pallbearers were: C. J. Orr, George Heins, Mike Grady, Joe Geraghty, Clement McDonald, Edmund Ryan, H. T. Orr and Frank Klotzbach.
Burial was in St. Patrick's cemetery.
