George Tieden, the son of Jans and Anna Bowman Tieden, was born Jan. 28, 1879, in Cox Creek township, Clayton county, Iowa, and died at his home in Volga township Feb. 09, 1956, at the age of 78 years and eleven days.
Mr. Tieden had been seriously ill since Dec. 25, 1955. Three years from the day of his death he underwent surgery and since that time had been in failing health.
He attended the rural school. His chosen occupation was farming.
On April 14, 1909, he was united in marriage to Sarah Buckman. They immediately started farming on the home farm in Communia where he resided until his death.
Mr. Tieden was a member of the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church, a charter member of the Farm Bureau, a member of the Masonic lodge No.72 A. F. & A. M. of Elkader, and active in other civic and county affairs.
He is survived by his wife, two children, Aaron of Monona, Georgina, Mrs. Alfred Horstman, living on the home place; two brothers and one sister, Jansey Tieden of Puyallup, Wash., Lewis of Elkader and Mrs. Anna Lehfeldt of Big Sandy, Mont., and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one grandchild, five sisters and two brothers.
Masonic services were held at the Witt chapel Friday, Feb. 10, at 8:00 p.m.
Funeral services were held at the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church, Elkader, at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, 1956. The Rev. Paul Kitterer officiated. Burial was in the East Side cemetery. The pallbearers were: Ferd Meenan, Earl Whittle, Matt Feeney, Arno Gottschalk, Otto Smelzer and Fred Kopp.
