MATT MILLER
Services for Mathew W. Miller, who died after a lingering illness, were held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Harold Witham, at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17, and at 2 p.m. at the Hope Lutheran church Littleport, with the Rev. W. Tillman officiating. Burial was in the Communia cemetery.
He reached the age of 60 years, 9 months and 1 day.
He was born in Dubuque, March 14, 1891, the child of Mathew W. Miller Sr., and Kathryn Fliet. He attended school in Dubuque.
In 1916 he was united in marriage to Anna Wentz. Four children were born to this union: Lawrence, Willis, Ivanelle, all of Elkader, and Lowell at home.
He spent most of his life farming near Elkport. He held offices of justice of the peace and school director, both for four years.
In 1947 he had his toe amputated in Mercy hospital at Oelwein. A year later his leg was amputated below the knee in the University hospital at Iowa City. In July, 1950, he suffered a stroke which affected his speech, and on Dec. 14 he suffered an internal hemorrhage which caused his death.
He is survived by his widow and four children, four grandchildren, three brothers and a sister, William Busher, Margaret Wall and Fran Miller, all of Dubuque, and Mike Miller of Strawberry Point, and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were: Arnold Gottschalk, George Strobel, Cliff Jennings, Delorse Willie, John Zapf, Ferdnand Meehan.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter.
Relatives from out of town attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Joe Wall, Rockford, Ill.; Mrs. Levi Phelps and Dale Phelps, Cassville, Wis.; Mrs. Margret Wall and William Busher, Dubuque; Mr. and Mrs. Mike Miller and Verla Mae, Strawberry Point; Mr. and Mrs. Howard Woodsman, Elrado; Mr. and Mrs. Emory Christson, West Union; Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Wentz, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Kraus, and Mr. and Mrs. Emil Kraus, all of Monona; Mr. and Mrs. August Kraus and Donald Kraus, Guttenberg.
