Elkader Register, Thur., 07 Jan 1886. Garnavillo column.
Died, on Tuesday, Jan. 05th, of consumption, John Thoma. The deceased was born in Garnavillo Feb. 09, 1861, and therefore was 24 years, 10 months and 16 days of age. He emigrated to Nebraska in 1879, where he resided until a few weeks ago, when he returned to his old home to die. He was married to Mary A. Clark in 1882. John, when he left us, to seek his fortune in new climes, was of a healthy and robust constitution and gave every promise of arriving at a ripe age of manhood. But soon the fatal disease attacked him, and in spite of all the care that loving friends could provide he succumbed to the grim tyrant, and died surrounded by a disconsolate wife, a stricken mother, sorrowing sisters and brothers and weeping friends. John was a dutiful son to his sorrowing mother, a loving indulgent husband, a kind friend. His remains will be buried on Friday. The services will be conducted by Rev. F. Sommerlad.
