Christian Beer, one of the highly respected citizens of Elkader, passed away at 12:30 Sunday morning. He was able to get down town on Wednesday of last week to look after some business matters but by Friday an attack of asthma, which he has been subject to for some years, set in and he rapidly grew worse until death came. He had reached the age of 81 years and 10 days.
Christian Beer was born in Winegan, Canton Bern, Switzerland, Feb. 27, 1834. When eighteen years of age he emigrated to this country and remained for a short time in Ohio, after which he came west and settled in Clayton County, which has ever since been his home. In 1854 he returned to his old home and brought his parents and sisters back with him.
Jan. 9th, 1860, he was united in marriage with Miss Marie Schori and to this union were born ten children, three of whom preceded their father in death. For twenty-two years the family lived on a farm in Highland township, but when Mr. Beer's eyes began to give him trouble he and his family moved to Elkader in 1882, which has been their home ever since.
Those left to mourn his death are his aged wife, two sons and five daughters, Mrs. Evelyn Kohler, of Elgin, Iowa; Wm. Beer, of New York City; Mrs. Louise Gehring, of Fayette County; Mrs. Ella Schmidt, of Elkader; Mrs. Anna Ebendorf, of Waukon; Mrs. Amelia Davidson, of Elkader; and Edward Beer, of Elkader; twenty-one grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and three sisters, Mrs. Anna Garber, Mrs. Verona Isch and Mrs. Barbara Kempf, all of Roanoke, Ill.
The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 at the home and at 2:00 o'clock at the German church and were largely attended. Rev. C. H. Franke officiated and burial was made in the East Side cemetery.
