Elkader Register, Fri., 31 July 1896.
This locality was startled Monday by the news of the sudden death that morning at Clayton Center, of Henry Mandelkow, of Farmersburg twp. Henry and his wife and other relatives had come over to his brother Hermann's place at Clayton Center for a visit and were at the table eating and having a merry time, when without any warning Henry fell from his chair to the floor and expired. It is stated that his death was caused by the rupture of an artery of the brain.
The deceased was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Mandelkow, and was born June 8, 1872. Nov. 20, 1894 he was united in marriage to Ella Westphal, of Madison County, Iowa, one child being born to them. His father died Nov. 7th, 1892. Besides the wife and child, his mother, three sisters, Mrs. Wm. Knuth, Mrs. Wm. Drahlmeyer, and Miss Tennie, and three brothers, Herman, August and Louis are left to mourn his sudden demise in what would seem to be the prime of early manhood. Henry was a good hearted, industrious young farmer, a faithful son, and a merry companion with his friends.
The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at Clayton Center, the services by Rev. Siefert being held in the churchyard grove, and were attended by a large number of friends of the family.
