Elkader Register, Thur., 05 Apr. 1923. Strawberry Point column.
A telegram came Saturday morning from Springfield, Ill., stating that Jas. Hughes had passed away after a few days illness and the remains were brought here Monday evening for interment. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Hughes formerly of this place, but now of Ames, Iowa. James was born and grew to manhood here, and he was a young man with good habits, and everybody was his friend. He graduated from the public school with the class of 1901 after which he went to Ames where he graduated. He has been in the employ of the Utility Commission Co. for a number of years. Funeral services occurred in the Congregational church Tuesday morning conducted by the pastor Rev. W. W. Maxwell. Interment took place in our beautiful cemetery. Besides his heart-broken wife and baby he leaves his parents Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Hughes of Ames, five sisters and four brothers, Mrs. Eva Cooper of Huntington Beach, Calif., Mrs. Jane Anderson of Ames, Mrs. Cassie Fliehler of this place, Miss Harriet Hughes of Cedar Rapids, and Mrs. May Baxter of Okla., and Attorney C. B. Hughes of Bloomington, Ill., Andrew, Howard and Amos of Ames.
