Clayton County Register, Thur., 01 Mar. Osterdock column.
Mary Louise Altman Bowman was born in 1848, in Fayette county, Pennsylvania. She came to Iowa when 17 years of age, via the old river route, with the Blaker family, the journey requiring three weeks.
She resided with her aunt, Mrs. John Henry Bowman, in Mallory township until her marriage three years later to Emanuel Bowman.
They settled on a farm in Mallory township, living there 12 years. Later they moved to Osterdock, Iowa, where Mr. Bowman built a large combined store and home. He died in 1895, and one son, Harry, died in 1913.
Mrs. Bowman resided in the old home until the time of her death, passing away Thursday, Feb. 22, after a short illness.
She is survived by three daughters, Emma and Elizabeth, who live at home and cared for their mother in her last illness, and Mrs. Maude Carothers, of Milwaukee, Wis.; also one son, Charles, in Osterdock. Four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive.
Mary Bowman was a kind and loving friend and neighbor, although blind for years, she enjoyed to have folks read to her.
Services were conducted by Rev. Nothdurft, of Colesburg, at Bethel church Sunday afternoon, and interment was in the Brown cemetery, near Colesburg. Friends and neighbors extend their sympathy.
