Elkader Register, Thur., 04 Sept. 1902.
In our last issue we noted the serious illness of Martin Mullen. His death occurred about 3 o'clock, Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 27th, 1902. Mr. Mullen was born at Ballna Slo, Ireland, in 1827, and he was about 75 years of age at his death. He came to America in 184_ (looks like 1846 or 1848), and worked in New York City until he came to Clayton County in 1855, and with the exception of a few years residence in Prairie du Chien, Wis., had resided on a farm in Sperry twp., until about 1893 when he moved to Elkader.
In 1849 at New York he was united in marriage with Mary Carroll, a sister of Mrs. Robert Quinn, of this place. In March 1896, Mrs. Mullen died leaving the aged husband childless.
Martin Mullen was a genial companion and a steadfast friend. Quiet in his manner, he endeavored to deal honestly with all. By his death the community has lost a good citizen and friend. He is survived only by nieces and nephews so far as we know.
The funeral was held Friday morning from St. Joseph church, attended by many sorrowing friends. May our old friend rest in peace.
