Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 30 Jan. 1913.
Sunday evening at five o'clock Mrs. Bergan, one of Sperry township's most highly respected women, passed away at her home two miles southwest of Volga.
Elizabeth Scully was born in Queen's County, Mt. Mellick, Ireland, Aug. 31st, 1833, and came to the United States in 1847, where she has since made her home. In 1853 at Verdant, Ill., she was united in marriage to Patrick Bergan, where they lived until 1878, when she moved to Iowa and located in Highland township. She lived there until 1883, when, with her family, she came to Sperry township. To this union were born eight children, a daughter dying in infancy. Patrick, Michael, James, John and Elizabeth, living in Sperry township, and Mrs. Mary Boland, of Highland, are left to mourn for a good mother.
Her funeral was held at Sacred Heart church Tuesday morning, Father Hetherington officiating. Her remains were laid to rest in her last home. It seems sad to mortal minds, yet it is God's will and all should say "Thy will be done."
Mrs. Bergan was a kind woman, always willing and ready to do for others. The fine remarks which Father Hetherington gave, were appropriate for the dead and instructive for the living.
