Mrs. Hofer died at her home at 6:30 a.m., Friday, July 16th. She was born in Luxemberg, Germany, on November 23, 1865, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nick Toutsch, and at the time of her death had reached the age of 75 years, seven months and 25 days.
At the age of 14 she came to America with her mother, her father having died in Germany. With her mother she settled on the Luxemberg Ridge in this township. On April 30, 1884, she was united in marriage, here in Elkader, with Edw. Hofer and for about 17 years they resided on a farm in this township. Five children were born to this union. One daughter died in infancy. The four surviving daughters are: Miss Josephine, at home; Teresa (Mrs. Dan Barton) Elkader; Mary (Mrs. E.F. Bear) Shannon, Ill.; and Clara (Mrs. L.G. Hibbard) Oak Park, Ill. Six grandchildren also survive.
Mrs. Hofer was a home-loving woman. She devoted her life to her husband and her children and one of her most treasured memories was the event of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of her wedded life. This occasion was observed just a few days before the death of Mr. Hofer.
