Melon Sue Horns was born September 20, 1957 in Postville, Iowa, the daughter of Leo and Ramona (Bentien) Christofferson. She grew up in the Monona, Iowa area and graduated from MFL High School in 1976. Following her high school graduation she attended NICC in Calmar, Iowa to become a CNA and worked as a nurse's aid in the Elkader, Iowa and Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin hospitals. On July 18, 1977 she married Myron Russell Horns in Monona. They were the parents of two sons. Myron was killed in a tragic hunting accident in 1989, leaving her to raise their young sons on her own. She returned to school at NICC where she was named student of the year in cosmetology for the State of Iowa. She also got her instructors license to teach cosmetology. Following graduation she operated "Mel's West Side Styles" cosmetology salon in Monona. In 1995 she moved her family to Harpers Ferry where she operated a salon by the same name for several years. Since 1997 she has lived with her partner Joe Hogan. Mel worked at Cabela's in Prairie du Chien for 13 years in the health services and safety departments. Mel was a craniosacral therapist and gave treatments to employees with headache and spinal problems. She also taught CPR and use of the defibrillator to employees following training she had received at NICC in Dubuque, Iowa.

Mel was always an active community volunteer. She and Myron were youth counselors at the Methodist Church in Monona. She worked with the Harpers Ferry Rescue Squad as an EMT-B and she was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Harpers Ferry. Mel's family was her passion and times with them were special. She and her boys loved to camp, first at Spook Cave and later at their trailer in Harpers Ferry. She enjoyed spending time on the Mississippi River and its sandbars. Mel crocheted and had made afghans for many of her family members. She was an excellent wild game cook and loved to help at the Harpers Ferry Fire Department wild game feed as well as cook for Joe's hunting buddies.

She is survived by her two sons Matthew Horns of Elkport, Iowa, his two children Spencer and Pfeiffer Horns, and Michael Horns of Waukon; a granddaughter-in-law Stephanie Horns of Guttenberg, Iowa; her partner Joe Hogan of Harpers Ferry, Joe's children Ryan (Dana) Hogan of Waukon and their children Brannon and Brady, Katie (Tony) Becker of Lansing, Iowa and their daughter Peyton; a sister Linda (Eldon, Jr.) Kurth of Monona; two brothers, William (Joyce) Christofferson of Postville, Iowa and Tim (Linda) Christofferson of Monona; her father-in-law and mother-in-law Irving and Barbara Horns of Decorah, Iowa and her special dog Muffie.
