Clayton County Register, Thur., 22 Aug. 1935.

St. Olaf: John Christ Johansen, son of Carl Johansen and Nielsina Paulsen Johansen, was born in Horsens, Denmark, on December 13, 1871. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He received his early education in Denmark. His mother died when he was twelve years of age. At the age of 14 he came to this country, together with his father and step-mother, two brothers and one sister. They made their home on a farm near West Union, where his father died in 1904. On Oct. 18, 1893, he was united in marriage to Johanna Jorgensen, at West Union. To this union were born seven children.

They made their home on a farm near Hawkeye, where the family resided until 1912, when they moved to a farm in Clayton county, which since has been their home.

After a long and painful illness, he passed away on Aug. 14, 1935, at the age of 63 years, eight months and one day. He was ever a patient sufferer and complained little, even when his family could see he was in untold pain. He longed for a rest and his end came with a peaceful sleep. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife and six children: Carl of Elkader, Henry of Postville, Mary (Mrs. Lloyd Ostlie) of Clermont, Emma (Mrs. Lorence Reinhardt) of Postville, Elsie (Mrs. Harvey Christofferson) of Postville, and John Jr. at home. One daughter, Eleanor, died in infancy. He is also survived by his step-mother, Mrs. Anna Johansen of West Union, and one brother, Paul, and one sister, Mrs. A. C. Palmer, both of West Union. One brother, Christ, preceded him in death. Nine grandchildren also survive him, also several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Johansen was a kind neighbor and was just and honest in his business dealings. He enjoyed nothing more than visits from his old friends and neighbors, and was never too busy for a friendly chat. He will be missed in his home and community.

Funeral services were held at the Marion church Saturday afternoon, Rev. S. J. Strandjord of St. Olaf officiating, with burial in the cemetery nearby. The pall-bearers were Louis Halverson, Will Monlux, P. N. Peterson, all of St. Olaf, Chris Jensen, Jens Jensen and Peter Olson, all of West Union.

Relatives and friends from a distance were Mrs. Anna Johansen, Miss Lena Lauridson, Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Palmer and son Carl, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Johansen and sons Carl and Howard, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Johansen, Mr. and Mrs. Max Matt and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. _____ ____ and children, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Oleson, Mrs. Maurice Oleson Godfrey Martin, Sherman Crandell, all of West Union; Arthur Craft of Hawkeye, and Christ Martin of Clinton, Iowa.
