Alexander Matt, a lifelong member of the Garber community, died on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at his home near Garber after several months' illness.
Alexander William Matt was born Feb. 15, 1875, on the homestead settled by his pioneer parents, and here he lived his entire life. He took up farming at an early age and on April 9, 1907, he was married to Mary Eggerth. Five children were born to this union, two daughters dying in infancy. Those living besides his widow are: Mrs. George Schaefers, Volga; Lawrence and Delbert at home; and five Schaefers grandchildren. He is likewise survived by two sisters, Mrs. Ida Zapf of Garnavillo, and Mrs. Clara Howe of Chicago. Two brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.
The Rev. Loras Holmberg conducted the services at St. Michael's church and preached the sermon to a capacity crowd gathered to pay final homage. St. Joseph's school choir from Elkader sang the requiem high mass.
Interment was made at St. Joseph's cemetery at Garnavillo.
Pallbearers were Frank Scheffert, Virgil Clefisch, Elmer Fritz, Alvin Berns, George Meyer and William Phelan.
Among those attending from a distance were: Mrs. Clara Howe, Chicago; Mrs. Ted Martin, Delaware, Ohio; Hubert Fassbinder, Epworth; Mr. and Mrs. Almore Ovel, Sarah Ovel, and Mrs. Lydia Schirmer, Lamont; Mr. and Mrs. John Kainz, Ernie Kainz, Mrs. Josephine Goedken, and Bernard Becker, Dyersville; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Fassbinder, Mr. and Mrs. Greg Junk, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Berns, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Stoefler, Mr. and Mrs. Rich Kann, Guttenberg.
