Elkader Register, Thur., 28 June 1906.
Monday evening Mrs. Hawthorne arrived from Madison, Wis., to visit her mother, Mrs. Motherall, at the home of Mrs. C. C. VanSickle. She intended to take her mother back with her, but on arriving here at 6:35 p.m. she learned that her mother had died about two hours before her arrival. Mrs. Motherall was one of the pioneer residents of this place, and the widow of the late John Motherall. She had been an invalid for six years, helpless from a stroke of paralysis. The funeral services were held Wednesday morning at 10:00 o'clock, at St. Mary's church, at McGregor, Rev. Father O'Donnell performing the last services over the departed. Four children, Mrs. C. C. VanSickle, of North McGregor, Mrs. Hawthorne, of Madison, and two sons, William and John, in New York, survive her.

Note: surname on the 1885 census & other records is spelled Motheral. John Motheral died in September 1897. The obit of Esther's daughter, Mrs. Vansickle says she was married to A.C. Vansickle, not C.C. Vansickle.
