In Elkader, Sunday, February 26th, 1871, of billious fever, Mrs. Jennie C. Benson, wife of Moses Benson, aged 42 years.
Mrs. Benson was the daughter of our venerable old settler friend, Horace D. Brownson, who is one of the oldest settlers in Clayton County. Mrs. Benson was then only a little girl, but in the sparse settlements of those days in this county, she fully shared in the excitements and privations of frontier life. On many an occasion have we listened to her stories of “old times” in the Turkey Valley, and some of those we have given to the public. Her death will cause a universal regret among all who knew her, especially among the old settlers, all whom knew and esteemed her above all the young ladies of former days.
But the severest blow is upon her affectionate husband and her loving father. Mr. Benson who is one of the most kind hearted men living, is stricken down with grief, while her dear old father feels as if his last prop had gone.
The funeral services were held at the Universalist Church, and were conducted by Rev. B.F.Taylor, pastor of the M.E. Church. The Church was crowded, and while the Minister preached upon the event that had called them thither, few eyes in the house of God were dry. Old men even saw the tears of grief and sympathy roll down their cheeks. It was a sad and impressive occasion. After the services at the Church, a large concourse followed the earthly remains to their last resting place.
It is difficult to comfort and console those who lose a near and dear friend, but there is nevertheless a consolation, and it is found in that faith that teaches us of a hereafter. Mrs. Benson leaves two sons, Chas. and Homer and one sister.
