Died in Elkader, April 4th, 1861, of Diphtheria, Maria Ann, daughter of Melvin B. and Carolina M. Hodgkins, aged five years, ten months and eight days.

Dear Maria, she has faded while in her youthful bloom,

Her graceful form has fallen and is laid in yonder tomb.

Our home has now no daughter- no daughter in the band;

She has left us- joined the ransomed within the spirit land.

Farewell Maria-daughter- the grave may claim thy dust;

They spirit, all immortal is dwelling with the just.

We’ll come and join the angels when the toils of life are o’er;

And greet thy happy spirit upon the other shore.
