Joseph Berns, 75, of Monona, passed on Tuesday night at Postville Community Hospital in this city, where he had been a medical patient for some time.

Clayton County Register, 17 June 1936.

MONONA: Joseph Berns, Sr., died Tuesday evening at the Community hospital in Postville, after having been a patient there the last few weeks. Funeral services were held at nine Saturday morning in St. Patrick's Catholic church, the pastor, the Rev. Father Luke Donlon, sang the mass of requiem, and burial was made in the Catholic cemetery at Garnavillo.

Mrs. Anna Berns, the widow, survives him, and Alex Berns, Albert O. Berns, Linus Berns and Mrs. Walter Matt are his children.

Mr. Berns was a man of good character, a member of St. Patrick's Catholic church, a good neighbor and kind friend.
