DAVID JACOBIA DEAD. A Prominent Marion Township Pioneer Passes Peacefully Away.
Died, Tuesday morning, June 23, 1908, at the family home in Marion township, Clayton county, Iowa, David Jacobia, aged 72 years, 6 months and 22 days, death resulting from a stroke of apoplexy following a prolonged period of failing health.
The deceased was born in Columbus county, New York, Dec. 1, 1835. Before attaining his majority he came to Iowa and secured the lands that have remained the home until his death. In 1862 he was married to Lovina Baker, who with the four children - Carrie B. Ruff, of Washta, Iowa; Myra E. Gray, of Postville; Homer D. and Ray E., at home - are living, and all, except Mrs. Ruff, were present at the funeral. Mr. Jacobia is the last of a family of eight children, a brother preceding in death but a few weeks.
The Jacobias, Lowns and other relatives were of the sturdy Holland Dutch ancestry that settled in New York in the early history of the country, a people of thrift, industry and character. Mr. Jacobia selected a spot to build a home that then overlooked an expanse of blue-joint and prairie grass that bordered Roberts Creek. Sturdy men alone sought such surroundings, but its scenery, attractiveness and early memories were the magnet that held him to it. He brought with him from the eastern home habits of life and methods of business that early marked him for a successful man.
Mr. Jacobia built for himself yet had a surplus to aid others with the necessary capital to hold their lands and establish their homes. His prosperity had no taint, his lending no usury and his success bred no envy. He was companionable with a quaint humor that put him in immediate touch with those both above and below him. He was conservative in business, safe in councel and scrupulously honest in his dealings. He did not seek or desire any office, nor did he hold any affilation fraternal or religious. Home was the citadel of his life and he fortified it with sunshine, kindliness and plenty. The community will miss his personality, his wife his companionship and his boys his counsel.-- W. C. McNeil. (relationship, if any, unknown).
The funeral will be held from the home in Marion township at 2 o'clock this afternoon, conducted by Rev. F. W. Pease of the Congregational church. Interment in the Eno cemetery.
