Byron Christopher Bernhard was born Feb. 17, 1894, in Giard twp., Clayton County, Iowa, to parents John Henry and Dora (Schweisow) Bernhard. He died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 1990 at the Great River Care Center in McGregor, Iowa, where he had been a resident for 4 years.
He was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist faith. He received his education in Giard School. He was a member of Garden City United Methodist Church and the Brotherly Love Masonic Lodge 204.
On Feb. 22, 1923 he was married to Emma Hartke. They had 4 children. Emma died July 17, 1948. On Jan. 25, 1955 he was married to Myrtle Rion. He farmed in Giard twp. for many years. In 1956 he moved to Monona.
Preceding him in death was his wife Emma; his wife Myrtle, and 2 sisters, Esther Wickershiem and Mae Hartke.
Surviving is one son, John H. of Monona; 3 daughters, Geneva Christensen of Vista, CA; Shirley Lindroth of Quincey, IL and Jean Hill of Iowa City; 17 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
Funeral services for were held Saturday, Sept. 15, 1990, at Giard United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Rev. Gary Dobbins officiating. Burial was in Giard Cemetery rural Farmersburg, IA.
Pallbearers were the grandchildren of Byron Bernhard.
Schultz's Funeral Home in Monona in charge of services.
