Clara Adell Bassett was born in Whiteside county, near Sterling, Illinois, June 6, 1861 and died at her home in Fayette, Iowa on April 21, 1945, aged 83 years, 10 months and 15 days.

With her family she moved to Strawberry Point, Iowa in October, 1866. Here she grew to young womanhood. Her education was received in the neighboring country school and in the town school at Strawberry Point. Following her graduation she was for one year a teacher in the public schools. As a young girl she joined the Congregational church of which she remained a faithful member her entire life. She enjoyed the church and its work and gladly lent her services as a member of the church choir.
On August 28, 1844 (sic) she united in marriage with Edward G. Platt of Edgewood, Iowa. The young couple made their home on a farm near Edgewood for a number of years. they were ever faithful and loyal members of the church and were always ready to give their time, money and efforts to the support of any good cause.
To them were born three children, Helen, Mrs. Paul Nagel, who preceded her parents in death; Ethel, Mrs. Fred Mullen of Elkport, Iowa' and Grace, Mrs. L. W. Sampson of Storm Lake, Iowa. Two granddaughters mourn her loss, Helen X. Sampson, now stationed with the Women's Army Corps, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and Dorothy C. Sampson, now witht the United States Public Health Service, in San Francisco, California.
Of her immediate family, Mrs. Platt is survived by two brothers, Henry Bassett, who made his home with her in recent years, and John Bassett of Arlington, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews.
In 1908 Mr. and Mrs. Platt moved to Fayette where Mr. Platt was for a number of years engaged in the grocery business. His death occured April 7, 1931.
All her life Mrs. Platt loved beautiful things. Music, flowers and birds, all nature held her attention and love. She filled her mind with the best of things of literature. She loved to read her Bible and ever found help and consolation in its pages. She prized her membership in the Twentieth Century Club and attended its meetings as long as health and strength permitted.
Besides her interest in the church and its work, she gave liberally for the cause of missions, to charity and to worthwhile causes. She was a good friend and neighbor ever ready to aid those in need.
She showed her practical interst in Upper Iowa University by taking into her home and making a college education possible for Miss Viola Schmidt, now a teacher in the Geneseo consolidated school near Waterloo, Iowa.
